The Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) was created by the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA). The RTA gives residential landlords and tenants rights and responsibilities and sets out a process for enforcing them. The role of the LTB is to resolve disputes between landlords and tenants through mediation or adjudication, resolve eviction applications and provide information to landlords and tenants about their rights and responsibilities under the RTA.
Frequently Asked Questions
The landlord can raise rent every 12 months but they must first give the tenant a 90 days notice in writing.
In Ontario many residential units are covered by The RTA. However not all rental units are covered, for example if the tenant shares a kitchen or bathroom with the owner or the owner’s family they are exempt from the act.
A landlord can not charge more than one month's rent.
A landlord has to give a tenant receipts for rent if the tenant asks for them. This also includes former tenants after the first year their tenancy ends.
Rent is considered late if it is not paid on the due date. For example if rent is due on the first and you pay it on the 2nd at 12:00 am it is late.
